La Plagne is located in the Tarentaise area of the Northern Alps and is made up of six high altitude resorts, Aime la Plagne (2100m), Belle Plagne (2050m), Plagne Villages/Soleil (2050m), Plagne Bellecôte (1930m), Plagne Centre (1970m) and Plagne 1800 (1800m).
All of the villages are linked by a free shuttle bus which runs between 8am and midnight every day.
La Plagne, together with Les Arcs and Peisey Vallandry forms the Paradiski – one of Europe’s largest ski areas which have been linked by the Vanoise Express since 2003. It is a 200 person , double decker, cable car. This lift crosses high above a steep valley, from the village of Les Coches in the La Plagne resort to Plan Peisey in Les Arcs and takes only 4 mins.
The Paradiski boasts 425km if pistes, with 70% of them above 2000m meaning excellent snow conditions. There are 160 lifts which transport skiers across the ski domain.
La Plagne boasts 225 km of pisted runs and 110 lifts, a Olympic bobsleigh, 900m snow park and an artificial ice tower.
The skiing goes up to a height of 3250 meters on the Bellecote glacier, and the extensive slopes are excellent for beginners and intermediate skiers/snowboarders.
The village of Les Coches in the resort of La Plagne, and its stunning chalets, are extremely popular. Particularly as La Plagne is now linked to Les Arcs, creating the ‘Paradiski’ area – certainly one of the largest ski areas in the world.
Les Coches is one of the villages in La Plagnes and is located at an altitude of 1450m and nestles on the wooded slopes, at the western fringe of the La Plagne piste area. It is a small, modern Savoyarde style village with a friendly atmosphere. The centre is virtually traffic free and has a selection of shops, bars, restaurants and one night club.
There is some lovely sheltered skiing above the village on fairly easy tree lined runs. The skiing here is generally snow sure being north facing and having extensive snow making.
Families are well served in Les Coches with children’s clubs from 6 months to 18 years.
Access from Les Coches, to the rest of the La Plagne area is easy, and the village is in an ideal position to ski or board the whole of the ‘Paradiski’ area, as the impressive, 200 person, double decker, cable car (Vanoise Express) that links Les Arcs and La Plagne, is located just above Les Coches. There is also wide-ranging terrain for experts particularly if a guide is hired to explore the off piste areas. For more resort information see our La Plagne facts page.
Montchavin is an old farming community and remains relatively unspoiled, it is just a short ski from Les Coches. It is located at an altitude of 1250m.
Les Arcs has 200km of pistes with lots of wide open runs good for cruising. It also boasts some lovely runs through trees and one of the longest black runs in the Alps. Like La Plagne the four main ‘villages’ of Les Arcs are purpose built, but at either end of the extensive piste area are several traditional and more attractive villages. It has great skiing or boarding for intermediate skiers.
La Plagne and Les Arcs are extensive resorts in their own right but linked together they have created a massive ski area, which is certainly on a par with the more well known Trois Vallees and Espace Killy areas.
